What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is an effective system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself (return to balance). It recognizes that symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and it is the person who needs support, not the disease.

In 1796, a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered a different approach to the cure of the sick which he called homeopathy (from the Greek words meaning 'similar suffering'). Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier, he realized there were two ways of approaching ill health: the way of opposites (which he called "allopathy"), most commonly used by conventional medicine, and the way of similars, as used in homeopathy.

Hahnemann discovered that diluting and succussing (shaking) remedies, which is called potentization, produced not only fewer side effects but also better results. Homeopathic remedies are drawn from natural substances and prescribed on the principle of treating “like with like” or The Law Of Similars. The effectiveness of this form of treatment has been verified both experimentally and clinically for more than 200 years. Widely used in Europe, Russia, Canada, Mexico, and South America, it is growing in popularity in the United States because of its effectiveness, safety and affordability.

Symptoms are a signal (call for help) by the body that something is out of balance. These symptoms can be physical, mental, and emotional. By properly matching the person’s symptoms with the appropriate homeopathic remedy, potency and dosage, we can stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself by rallying its defenses to work towards bringing the body back into balance.

With homeopathic medicine, if the symptom goes away, it is because the body is healing and going back into balance. It is not that the symptom (or signal for help from the body) is being masked or covered up.

What Is “Like With Like”?

Take for example, a case of insomnia. The way of opposites is to treat this by giving a drug to bring on an artificial sleep. This frequently involves the use of large or regular doses of drugs, which can sometimes cause side effects or addiction and possible negative chemical interactions with other drugs, food, or drink.

The way of similars is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance (note that potencies at 12C and above contain no measurable chemical trace of the original substance), such as coffee, which in large doses causes sleeplessness in a healthy person. The homeopathic form of coffee (Coffea Cruda) can actually help the patient to sleep naturally by stimulating the body’s natural response to calm the system. Homeopathy is person-centered and a homeopath will recommend a remedy based on the totality of a person’s symptoms and how the person, as an individual, experiences them. This also takes into account the person’s individual characteristics, both emotional and physical.

Are Homeopathics Safe?

Homeopathic remedies, properly prescribed, are safe and can be given to pregnant women, babies, children, and the elderly (Reference: Dantas, F., Rampes, H.: "Do homeopathic remedies provoke adverse effects?").

Every substance has both a chemical composition and an energetic make-up (i.e. footprint) that is unique. Our bodies also have a chemical and energetic make-up, and therefore can be stimulated both chemically and energetically. The body can be affected chemically by the substances we ingest or inject. Therefore, in treating on a chemical level, as in traditional medicine, there must be great care in understanding each substance that is being prescribed, its interactions with the body as well as with other substances.

In homeopathy, the process of dilution and succussion (shaking) dilutes the chemical make-up of the original substance to a point where there is little or no measurable (in 12C potencies and above) trace of the substance in the remedy, while ensuring the energetic footprint of the substance is preserved. By taking a homeopathic remedy, we can stimulate the body, on an energetic level, to return to balance without causing a chemical interaction in the body or concern about negative interaction with any other form of treatment.
